PROJECTS

The Quilt
The Quilt Project:
Fractions & Measurment

My 2nd grade gifted Math Trailblazer class participated in an authentic learning experience.  The students worked together under my guidance to create a quilt to donate to a charity.

During this unit of study students:

  • Learned about the math used to sew and create a quilt, primarily focusing on fraction and measurement concepts,

  • Collaborated with their peers to create a product from start to finish,

  • Used their curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills to design and create a quilt,

  • Used their prior knowledge to apply to a real-life situation,

  • Made connections to why quilts are an important part of our history,

  • Communicated to the greater community about the project they were working on,

  • Read stories about quilts,

  • Used textiles and other materials,

  • Learned how to use and respect tools of the trade such as a needle and thread, measuring tools, a sewing machine, scissors, and the like,

  • Utilized technology to research quilting and related topics, and

  • Helped create a digital record of their experiences.

Nutrition
The Cereal Project:
Data Analysis, Graphing, Computation

The students analyzed a variety of cereals that they had eaten regularly for breakfast.  They collaborated with their classmates to learn about the nutrition of each cereal and drew conclusions about which cereals were the healthiest.

During this unit of study students:

  • Collected data,

  • Calculated cost per ounce,

  • Learned how to use Microsoft Excel to create a spreadsheet and a variety of graphs,

  • Collaborated with their peers to learn about nutrition,

  • Used their curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills to design a graph depicting their findings, and

  • Drew conclusions about which cereal was the healthiest and therefore the best choice.

Authors
Kids ARE Authors

My 4th grade gifted Language Arts class worked in teams to write and illustrate their own book to submit to the Scholastic Kids Are Authors competition.

During this unit of study students:

  • Read books by a variety of authors and illustrators to gain an understanding of a variety of artistic qualities as well as writing style and voice,

  • Compared and contrasted the different styles,

  • Learned about elements of story writing including plot, theme, and character development,

  • Determined which style of writing appealed to them most,

  • Collaborated with teammates to write and edit a fictional story,

  • Determined which art medium would best represent their story, and

  • Created the story and all of the art in the book.

$1,000,000
Can $1,000,000 Fit in a Briefcase?
Area, Measurement, Estimation, Volume, Computation, Fractions, Decimals

4th through 6th grade students collaborated to determine if they could fit $1,000,000 inside an average size briefcase through this unit that incorporated estimation, area, volume, measurment, converting measurements, computation, and more.
